Sorry, yet another one -
I recently had a BG quote -
Worcester Bosch 18Ri High - £690
Vertical Flue Terminal -£261
Replacement boiler installation - £1207
pitched roof flashing kit - £194
connect boiler electrics and test - £190
Sub Total - £1852
pair 45' flue elbows (x1) - £131
Flue pipe extension (x3) - £247
install white plastic pipe - "22
External condensate connection - £79
condensate waste to soil pipe - £40
install pipe (22mm x 3 mt)(x2) - £139
Minor building work £90
Supply and fit switched spur - £66
delivery charge - £59
Disposal charge £49
Sub Total - £923
Powerflush £367
Heating controls - £361
Reconfigure pipework - £181
Frost protection - £119
Subtotal - £660
Total - £4493
Less £500 discounts.
How does this sound - The boiler is cheap, but then they overcharge on accessories, some I can get elsewhere for a quarter of the cost. They then overcharge for "labour" and on top, multi charge for this. The best one is the £49 disposal fee - can you see a cast iron boiler and some copper pipe lasting long if I leave it in my front garden.
Can anyone suggest where I can a sensible quote for this job or comment on the above - replace conventional boiler with gravity hot water, with another conventional boiler, fully pumped. The BG quote did not even include a replacement cylinder - my copper one has a loose fitting jacket - he said that a new one would not be as good as it would be stainless steel, and cost £500 in addition. I asked about fitting a magnatec and he said that it would not be required following a powerflush and chemicals added.

My answer here in response to your same post (which has disappeared) on that thread still stands...any other quotes in for comparison?

Thank you - I moved it to see if I could get more replies as I though it may be missed included in another post. Any ideas on finding a good reliable "RGI"?0

Sounds a typical BG price! (way too expensive)
Get some other quotes as I'm sure you can knock that down by approx £1500 or maybe more.

There ya go - 'avoid BG' summed up in two simple sentences. All in my humble misinformed opinion obviously.italiastar wrote: »The BG quote did not even include a replacement cylinder - my copper one has a loose fitting jacket - he said that a new one would not be as good as it would be stainless steel, and cost £500 in addition. I've just paid £1850 for a new Ariston boiler with a 5yr guarantee.

I have just had a boiler fitted by Boilers r'us (terrible name). They offer a fixed price list for supply and installation which you can find on the web for comparison. This includes ALL necessary materials, reconfiguration of pipe work etc but might not include any building work.
Charging for delivery and disposal is just a joke. They are coming to fit the boiler anyway aren't they? My company said that they were very happy to take the old boiler away as they got its scrap value.
Dear old British Gas quoted approximately 3 times what I eventually paid, but they almost refused to quote as they said they could not be compared to what they called 'independent' companies as the quality of their work was so superior. As it happens I had a couple of other bits of gas work thrown in for free -' a ten minute job and we're here already' - for which BG quoted £250 plus vat.0 -
Thank you, I'm South West London as opposed to SE but Boilers R Us may come my way. Are the prices plus VAT - either way, they are what I consider to be correct. As for British Gas being "Superior" in my experience they are appalling - I had one engineer who installed a fire very badly, without even correct tools. They then sent another engineer to correct the first ones work, and he used a hacksaw to open up the slots in the burners - I assume to make up for the low gas flames - This bodge resulted in a third engineer attending and condemning the appliance and installation, which resulted in the appliance being replaced and fitted by a senior engineer.0

We paid £2300 for a new Worcester condensor boiler including fitting/frost protection etc and that included it being put in a different location to the one it had replaced so moving the pipes etc. We used a local corgi reg plumber who was great. He did the work quickly and tidied up after himself!0

Sounds like an identical job to mine - in fact moving mine makes the job easier as the boiler will be almost below the cylinder and directly behind the gas meter for the new supply (22mm pipes). Are you near me -can you recommend your installer?0
