SHDOCVW.dll

Options
When trying to reboot my computer,I get the following message:

Explorer.exe - unable to locate component ..... SHDOCVW.dll

When I click OK the screen goes blue. Can do nothing but power off. I have tried starting in Safe Mode and last known good configuration, but neither make any difference. Operating system is XP Home.

Any ideas.

  • Try Start - Run - type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll - OK.
  • I can not even get to start. When rebooting, it gets to the user login page and I click on my account name. The error message then comes up with nothing else in the background apart from a blue screen. When I click OK all I get is a full bluescreen. No icons, no toolbars absolutely nothing.
  • Do you have more than account, if so log into that and try the above advice.

[STRIKE] Can you log into safe mode on the defunct account?[/STRIKE]

    Just read your first post.

Can you control+alt+delete - if it opens, go to File > Run and type explorer.exe
  • I have two accounts that normally appear and Administrator appears when I boot in safe mode. I have just tried opening with the second account. Whilst not much happens, I can use task manager. I typed in "regsvr32 shdocvw.dll " and ithas come up with "LoadLibrary("shdocvw.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found. If I can get a copy of this file from another computer, could I then open it through task manager?
  • Thanks for the link. I have copied it on to a USB stick and browsed to it through task manager. I tried to open it and task manager has asked me to associate a program type. I think I need to get it installed into C:\Windows\System32 , but how can I do this?
  • Managed to sort it. I downloaded an installer from ascentive.com and followed the instructions, downloaded it and opened it through task manager. An install window opened and I followed thesteps to install the files. I rebooted and now everything works. Thanks very much for your help.

    Replacing shdocvw.dll:

    SOLUTION:

In order to fix this problem, you'll need to set up and register the library file.

The easiest way to do that is to download the following file that will install and register most of the Library Files used by Ascentive's products (if you still see the error, try the manual instructions below).
Please use the following URL to download a 5.66 MB (5,935,720 bytes) Ascentive Library Installer.

Right click on the above link and select "Save target as..."
  • Glad your sorted.
