Admiral NCB confusion

Hiya, hope you can help. Im very confused.

I took out a mutlicar policy with Admiral on 2 cars in my name. My OH is the main driver on 1, and I am the main driver on the other. Each of us are named drivers on the others policy.. hope your with me so far.

OH- Car 1 insurance started on 25th Sep 11 for 1 year.
Mine- Car 2- insurance due to start on 4th Oct 11.

The guy at Admiral phoned us several times as he was really keen to get the business. We had a few issues to clear up as car 1 has loads of modifications, so we needed a few calls here and there to sort out what needed cover.

The final call he made to us was to go over the policy details 1 more time and pay. At this point he said he will put the end date of the insurance on Car 2, as the same date as Car 1- 25th Sep 12. Therefor only 357 days worth of cover.

I then asked how this would affect my insurance next year, as I wouldn't get a whole years NCB. He said not to worry, as I would get 1 full year on Car 1 as a named driver and I could use that.

I was having a conversation today at work and my colleague is certain that I cannot use a NCB on another car and what the guy at Admiral told me was incorrect. I could use it as a NCB on the first policy, but could not add it to my NCB i have built up on Car 2.

OH has 3 years NCB. (Touch wood) he doesnt have an accident between now and the end of the policy, he will get 1 more-total 4NCB.

I have 3 years NCB on Car 2 already.
My colleague says that at the end of the policy, I can get a new policy using 3yrsNCB on Car 2, and 1yr on Car1.
This isn't what I wanted.I dont want to be a named drive on OH's car next year. I wanted to use 4yrs NCB on car 2!

I am not an expert on car insurance. I know very little. I have read through the entire policy on Admiral and I can't see much information on using the NCB.
The fact that the member of staff specifically said to me, not to worry, I can use the named drivers NCB made me pay the premium and go ahead.

I didn't think anything else of it until today, at work. Reading up online I think he may be right about not using NCB on a different car.

Any ideas what I should do?
I am going to ring them tomorrow. I'm thinking I should just extend the policy on car 2 so it lasts a whole year. Only adding a few extra days.

A nice little admin fee will apply for the amendment though and that ticks me off a bit, as I believe I was misinformed.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for reading.

Why not just wait and see what your renewal notice says. If the NCB hasn't got a year added on, just extend it then by a few days to make it a full year.
  • I agree that I will just have to extend the policy, because how can it say 1 years NCB if its not a full year?
Amending the policy seems like the only way, but its the admin charge that I don't want to pay :(

    Thanks for the comment.

It may be but why worry about it at this time and pay an admin fee when you may not need to. What I'm saying is wait and see what the renewal notice says - I don't know how Admirals systems work.

There may be an Admiral representative on the forum. Can you amend the thread title to include 'Admiral' so they may see it and offer help?

  • I wouldn't think it would matter, for the past 3 years I've been with Admiral on a 10-month policy and recieve a full years NCB every 10 months

NCB is per driver per policy, so assuming a driver has one policy, i.e. one car, and has been insured for 4 yrs then then have 4 yrs NCB. If this one driver had 2 cars, so 2 policies then they would have 2 x 4 yrs NCB. NCB lapses after 2yrs AFAIR.

If say man and wife each have cars and insurance then they each have NCB. If they then drop back to one car shared then the best action is to swap each year so they keep their NCB current.

Usually with multi-car if you renew after ~10 months then you get another years NCB but you could push for that and have it confirmed.
  • With admiral multi car you will gain a full year NCB for any other cars on the policy along as they have completed 3 months or more before the renewal date and this will be for the policy holder for the car so you will in fact have 4 years at renewal For the second car
