The last-but-one item that I copied was a text composition which I intended pasting in shortly. Unfortunately I forgot about it for a while and copied something else. Can I recover it? I'm on XP Home.

Don't think so unless you had some special software installed to record what you had clipped.0

Some software does this using a special clipboard, e.g. MS Office has the ability to track multiple items. However the standard windows clipboard won't do this, unless you had special software installed. The clipboard should only ever be thought of as a temporary medium and not used to hold important information0 -
i installed a little program called Clipomatic (freeware) has 2 lists. a permanent clipset something you could use to put in your name / address etc into. and a default clipset the data you copy and paste, by default it stores the first 10 copies but this can be changed to whatever you like. 20, 50 dont think theres a max.
