Cheshire Building Society have lost our money!

Options
I closed an account with the Cheshire Building society, writing a letter, and enclosing the passbook and asking for the funds in the account to be put into our bank. I put the letter through the door of the Chester branch as it was a sunday - so it would go in the internal post rather than through the post. I got a letter back saying that the account had been closed and the money had gone into a Bank of Ireland account. We don't have a Bank of Ireland account!

When I phoned them about it they said they would have to check my letter to prove I was telling the truth and said they would get back to me - Ive heard nothing 10 days later.
(1) they can't do their core business of managing money it appears
(2) they are not very responsive or helpful when there is a problem

Immediately send a letter to their complaints department saying you want the matter resolved with any consequential loss covered. You need to do this before you can use the financial ombudsman so tell them that this is your intention unless resolved within a given period of time. Don't worry they will sort the matter out.
A few years ago Barclays lost £1.3M of mine during a CHAPS transfer for five days, it was sorted out and the compensation they offered was most generous. Just don't worry.
    Change is here to stay
  • Where did you ask them to send the money? Have you checked that account because the funds could be there and it could just be a mistake in the letter.

Do you have a Post Office account? Their system might recognise the Post Office sort code as Bank of Ireland.

Your money will be somewhere so please don't worry. The worse case is they have accidentally sent it to someone else's account. If so they should reimburse you immediately. I would give them another call and ask what is going on.
