Miserable old c**t, tell him to go f*** himself.
It will written into the deeds for the property that the road is shared access.

I bet he's got those "Private Road - No U-turns" signs up outside his property, am I right???

If so, let me know where it is, I hate pretentious tw4ts and I'd love to practice my J-Turn's :D
(well how else would I get out of the street?)

Some people are just too up themselves, especially if they have something most others do not.
My folks live in a private road (it's a right mess of an old concrete road surface), the value of the houses in the street start from £450k, right through to £1.5m. NOBODY in that street gets uppity about people driving down it (or parking)!!
It's only the wannabe's that act like this.

you see a private road wont be built [tarmac wise] to the same standard as a highway, the cost is prohibitive, so a neighbour who contributes one quarter to repairs is quite entitled to voice his opinion that the road is being used to excess, and to ask for a consideration, so the people who posted on here that he should go f himself should think again, in the case of totally unmade roads with no repairs carried out whatsoever as per Strider590 post i usually find that the street has had a quote for repairs but some neighbours dont want to contribute [ various reasons include they dont have a car theyre too tight etc etc ] therefore leaving the majority stuck with a poor road.
You see i do live on a private road, and i can see the mans point, no he cant stop you going up, but he can be upset to see his contribution to the road being "over used " without recompense.
i, and my immediate neighbour spent £5k having the road repaired to a high standard [ not highway standard though, only 3.5 ton max ] but only outside our immediate properties, and its only a very small area, now we have a well known breakdown company van driver who is based at home on call out, destroying the rest of the private road with his fully laden 3 ton van, not destroying our piece but totally destroying the rest, and totally refuses to contribute to any repairs, think again before jumping on the f him attitude.

^^ It's not driving on the road that f**ks it up, it's the weather, the wind, rain, snow and most importantly ICE (go look at how pot holes are formed).

The guy is a stupid, illogical, arrogant, bloody minded old fool.....

That's the problem with private roads though.
Complete mess normally as half the residents are so stretched on the mortgage they can't afford to repair it, and the other half have been converted to bedsits and the landlord won't pay.

Hope OP comes back and tells us the state of the road mentioned, but I suspect residents are going to be more inclined to be arsey about it, when the road is in good condition or has recently been resurfaced.

I think it's just some fool trying to keep strangers out of his private little street.... "This is a local road, for local people"

Plenty of them around by were I live, always got the "Private Road" signs up and the "No Uturns" signs. Seriously, what's the point? does it make a difference to anyone? will people treat it any differently?
I treat it differently, if i've got to turn around and ive the choice between a normal street and one with "no u-turn" plastered all over it, i'm definitely heading for the later :rotfl:

It's never the big/long private roads with the big expensive houses, it's always the tiny little cul-de-sac with a few semi-detached homes and net curtains twitching away all day long.

Talk about "delusions of grandeur"....... :rotfl:

I'm in Scotland so I'm not an expert on the ins and outs of English road status (although as ever I know a man who is) so I may have this slightly wrong but I think it is mostly all there.

It can be one of three things. The first 2 are essentially the same.

Public (Adopted) Road- A road maintained by the public purse- normal road traffic laws apply
Private Road - A road maintained privately - normal road traffic law still applies and only the council can control access/parking. Handbrake turns on a private road are still a no-no!

Both of these are roads, and thus being roads under the regulations there is a public right of passage on them. The only difference is who maintains them- the public purse or private owners. Private road doesn't mean the same as private on an office door as commonly thought.

Lastly it could be a private access. If it has a gate (even if closed for just 1 day a year) then it is more likely to be a private access which would be private in the sense as for residents and visitors and not general access but would depend on title deeds and a whole load of other regs.

On the maintenance of a private road, if someone did damage a car / tripped the frontagers, if responsible for maintenance, could be held responsible in that circumstance. You need to check title deeds and all sorts of other legal complications. Indeed it is possible under the highways act for councils to do repairs of private roads or force those responsible into action.
