HELP!! Printer installation advice needed!!!

I hope you techie folk might be able to help me before I throw my new printer out of the window!
I am having major probs trying to install my new HP Deskjet D1360. I have installed a few things before so I am not a complete technophobe.
Anyway I followed all the instructions that came with it and everything goes ok until I load the installation CD and the following happens:
A wizard screen appears and instructs me to click next for the recommended installation. The first time I did this everything seemed to be allright but the installation took forever and eventually stopped so I uninstalled all the HP stuff with the intention of starting again.
When I started the installation again I got to the point where the wizard window appears and you are told to click the next box to start the recommended installation. Another window appears saying "please wait while wizard searches" and underneath that "USB printing support". This takes a while and then another window appears saying that the device cannot be installed as an error has ocurred and that "the required section was not found in the INF".
In the troubleshooting advice that comes with the instructions it says if you have problems you should disable your anti-virus software and firewall which I did but this didn't work either. Please help!!
Thanks in advance

Thanks so much for your link. I followed all the instructions and the window appeared saying that the printer was installed but when I go to print anything a fax wizard appears as if I am trying to send a fax. When I go to the control panel to view the installed printers it is not there just a fax and a microsoft image writer.

i have a HP 2600n and it was a complete nightmare to install. The techie guys at Hp are fantastic & very patient (couldn't help though) . so, try using another port when you install through the control panel (add new hardware). put the kettle on, put some good music on, get a comfortable chair and avoid everybody for the next few hours of computer madness.........or... spend £30 and get a techie from your local paper advert to come round and fix it. (hope the first method works for you though):j bad with names?? just call people "bollox", and you'll never get it wrong again

Thanks to everyone who has replied - I am using XP.
Anyway I switched everything off and started again and the installation using the CD has worked and my laptop says it has been successful and there are HP icons on my desktop. However when I go to print a send fax wizard keeps appearing and nothing prints. When I go to the control panel to view the installed printers the HP is not there just a fax (which I don't have) and a microsoft office document image writer (don't know what that is!).

Try running the "Add a Printer" wizard from Printers and Faxes.
Stupid question - it appears you have successfully installed the printer software but have you actually made the USB connection to the PC and turned the printer power on?

Everything switched on and connected - am trying the Add a printer wizard but have just had a scary window appear saying that Microsoft strongly recommends that I do not continue with the installation as the software (disk that came with it) is not approved!!!?!!
Am seriously thinking of returning this and getting another make/model!!
Thanks0 -
Don't worry about the software not being digitally signed in this instance. Quite often happens with HP printer drivers.

Reboot ... and
To select the printer use File >> Print - not the icon and
have a look what your default printer is ...
It will be the one with the tick against it. to change right click on the non default printer and select "Set as default" via Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Printers & Faxes OR Start >> Settings >> Printers ans Faxes >> right click on the printer icons here .. then just using the printer icon in an application will work

I too have an HP 2600N and it was a right pain to install and make work.
In the end my brother had to set it up as a network printer. I think that's what the "N" means ... should've bought the non-network version.
It's all working fine now.0
