Waredrobes in an alcove - best way to make them look smart?

Hello,
After years in our current home we are finally updating our bedroom. We've moved the waredrobes (they look pretty good still and have sliding doors) into an alcove. We plan to seal up the sides (there's only about a 4 inch gap) and paint them the same as the walls.
There is a bigger gap at the top though and we'd love to be able to use that space still be still make the over all look of something that's built in. (we could really do with the space - there's stuff everywhere
)
The width is about 2.3m and about 25 cm high. We do have some mdf that we can recycle but just not sure how to fit it to make it a practical storage space.
Any ideas?
