She can contact local council office to check whether there`s any shop or store in the area which provide second hand furniture, fridge, frezer etc on very low prices to those who are claiming major mean tested benefits like Income Support, JSA etc. Social Fund is really for those who have major change of circumstances like change of home, coming out of prison, residential care, refugees, domestic violance etc. If you go for Budgeting loan it would take 3-4 weeks to process. You have to be claiming Income Support or JSA or Pension Credit not less than 26 weeks to qualify Budgeting Loan. You can try Crisis loan on the basis that you have kid(s) and you need freezer/fridge on urgent basis. Crisis Loan wont class fridge as crisis but you have to explain the situation. The Good thing about crisis loan is you get money same or next day.

Is the fridgesaver scheme still being operated by Currys? If your on tax credits or certain benefits you can get a brand new fridge for £50.
