I'm soon off to Oz - best car hire in Sydney I could find was with East Coast Car Rentals.

We too used them, but we booked excess car hire insurance prior, with worldwideinsure or insurance4carhire. Don't remember which.

    Don't skimp on these things.

We've just returned from Oz and didn't really notice petrol varying in price day to day. As a rough guide you will pay in Aus$ what you pay in £'s here so, yes, it is cheaper. Everything else, however, you will pay through the nose for! It's currently a very expensive place to visit.

The supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths etc.) often have deals where you get 10c off a litre if you spend $30 on groceries too (not difficult!)

Thanks Claire - I'll follow up that link. That's just the sort of thing I had in mind. I am hoping that the Ozzies, and particularly the tourist office, will take pity on us whingers, and promote plenty of good discounts to entice us over.

We'll probably join the YHA as we've noticed that rural B&B's can easily equate to £120+ per night. Good point about the trains. Sydney to Melbourne is a good price, so we'll do that bit by train.

    No bananas for us though!

    Ta,

I found the long distance trains incredibly expensive and slow, flying was much better and cheaper, and quicker by hours, so if youve found a good price then I guess it comes down to your preference on what type of transport. But short distance trains to get around cities were a better price than in the UK, same for buses.

The tourist offices were pretty good, the one in Melbourne was very helpful, they booked some trips for us - which meant we didnt have to pay to call to do it ourselves!
