Working an appretinceship, able to claim working tax credit?

Hello everyone.

I've tried to find the answer by searching on here, but my parents are already claiming working tax credit and I live in the same house. I'm wondering if I took up an apprenticeship position which would pay £91 a week, whether a potential claim from myself would impact on my parents benefit? Essentially, is the working tax credit inclusive of household/whole family, or would I be able to claim separately? I'm 26 btw.

My parents earn very little, and struggle to get by even with working tax credit, so I wouldn't want to claim if I'm going to take away from them (if its all combined for a family/household).

Thanks

Marie

  • Your claim has no impact on your parents claim. Being over 20 they wouldn't have been able to claim for you since that time and your income isn't included in theirs

You can claim wtc in your own right as long as you are working 30 hours weekly (unless you have a disability and then it could be 16 hours).
