Hi Guys, I am experiencing scanning problems with Avast. It,s been doing it a lot lately, telling me certain files cannot be scanned, .
When I click on results of last scan I get loads of ERROR; Archives password protected.
Here,s one example,shortened.
C:\users\joe...\bgBody.png;;;;error;archives password protected.
There are hundreds similar.
Under headline cannot be scanned, all files shown ,the severity is clear, no threat.
It says select the required action for each result and CLICk APPLY, or APPLY ALL.
To Chest etc.dropdown at bottom right.
Just done another, same results.
Are all these in the vault??
Don,t want to Click anything I,m not sure of, might send all my files to Vault.
There are loads like it with different wording after the 3rd backward slash\bgBody.
To my knowledge I have not got anything password protected, and they are all archive.
Any help would be grateful.

If my memory serves me right, didn't you have a malware infection a couple of months ago after clicking on a link in an email? Could it be your passwords were harvested?

Hi waddler, nowt wrong with your memory.
    YES, I,m the same idiot.
Just running eset online scan at present to see if it picks anything up.
I,m lucky to have bad luck waddler, as you can see by my thread on BT box. They could have been harvested, but no one has claimed any spurious e-mail from my address.so assumed it was ok.
I can understand it harvesting Gmail, as that,s saved, but NEVER save bank et.al passwords.

    UPDATE:
Changed several passwords, none now saved , and eset found nothing on PC,.
    Malwarebytes/spybot all AOK too.
Any help on why Avast cannot scan certain files??

    archives password protected
Basically think of an archive as a file (or files) within a file (eg .zip .cab etc). For avast to scan the file(s) that are within the archive, it has to first extract them... then scan them individually... and them put them back together in the original file (archive).

If the archive is protected with a password that must be input before the files can be extracted, then Avast can't extract the file(s) to scan it/them as it doesn't know the password.

Give an example of the full path to the files, including the filename.

Hi waddle thanks again, I,ve tried to copy/paste one of them, but it won,t let me.As I stated before, they all start the same,at least a hundred.
Here,s the gist of one, but abbreviated
    C:\Users\joe\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\TempinternetFiles\ContentIE5\U5NHWTEI\instal...flashplayer***************************bg\Body.png
As stated, they all start with the C\;\Usersthen it changes to all sorts of data, and all end in png
Hope this doesn,t confuse you too much.
How come so much is Archived with Password.
I,ve never archived anything, ever, never mind a password.
Or has something else done it?

delete your ie temp files with ccleaner, or set IE to delete them automatically on closure
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • In addition to what has already been said,

There are a few reasons for it happening. One is that some security software does it, there are others...

Essentially avast is reporting that without the password, it can't scan it. It is not reporting a problem, just telling you that.

    The long answer:
    http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=83518.msg680617#msg680617

These appear to be temporary internet files, so can be cleared with the likes of CCleaner...

Since avast reporting this is just for information, you wont be able to click apply etc in the scan results because there is no action to take ;)

That's the actual file there. It'll be something like: install_flashplayer10_mssd_aih_2.exe

You must have installed Adobe's FlashPlayer. The file is an installer file and is an archive in the form of a self extracting executable (.exe) which must be encrypted.

You've probably got a whole load of files avast can't scan like:

    adobe/images/bgButtonFinished.png
    adobe/images/bgDownloadBarError.png
    adobe/images/bgHeaderError.png
    adobe/images/buttonLeft.png
    adobe/images/buttonRight.png

    ...etc.
