French diesels are normally some of the most reliable.

Thanks so much for your help so far everyone, some really really useful and interesting posts here. I clearly have a lot to learn. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

What would you offer on the car I linked? I know it would only be a rough guess having not seen the car etc. Its just most cars in my area (+60 miles) seem to be around this price for the year with lower spec. What basis would you use to haggle, age? I'm going to ask OH to call them at lunchtime to ask about tyres, cambelt and see if we can arrange a viewing.

We had one of the first ones.

It coped with a double pushchair and 2 child seats

It didn’t break down (over 4 years and about 240,000 miles)

    It did about 75mpg

    Need I say more?

So, just "it's french, I don't like the french, they're not Japanese"?

Vax, can you say a bit more about the problems on this particular model? I'm so clueless about cars, and would really appreciate a link or something to read a bit more, I tried doing a google search but obviously didn't enter the right terms.

Until I saw this car I was totally against French cars, but reading that its in conjunction with Nissan made me reconsider, although the diesel engine is french. Aaah I don't know enough about this sort of thing, trying to educate myself but you all seem to know so much :(

Always have a look at the cars/engines cabbies go for.

The Modus is useless for taxi use, but the same engine can be found in various late-year Lagunas, which seem to be overtaking the Octavia as ‘cab of the month’ here.

If all was good, fsh, etc, I'd expect £2500 to be a reasonable offer if it's been there a few weeks. It'll be worth doing the cambelt, for the age, if not the milage, as it's been on there 8 years if it's the original.
So if you could get that off the £2500, or get it done by the dealer, that would be a good deal.
It depends how badly you want one though, as you say, they're all around that price. But then, fortunately, there are people that won't touch french cars with a xenophobic zeal, so it keeps the price down for the rest of us, and makes the dealer more keen to sell them for a reasonable offer.

    There aren't any.

    Google

    1.5dci turbo seals

there are the odd couple, on the clio, which usually gets thrashed, and the higher boosted scenic, same reason.

Not a real problem, just a couple of cases that come up, and more from abuse when thrashing the car normally.
As forgotmyname said, any turbo can do it, the renault less than most it appears from the search.

Well, I couldn't hold on any longer and rang the garage...sold yesterday :(

Its great learning about them though, I had totally discounted Renault before but it does seem to be worth considering.

Thanks so much for your help everyone, I have a much better picture now of what to look out for!! So, who is coming with me to traipse around garages this weekend :P

will tell you the DCI 1.5 is renaults little jem. no injector faults, nothing as vax as described turbo failure as a common problem and more seen in the renault 2.2 traffic/nissan,vx partnership thats done 400K with very little TLC and completely different engine and turbo altogether. ive seen it once happen to a ford escort van also so not limited to just renault.

will say if it has a card and card reader fitted insist on three cards!! as part of the deal.
