Firstly don't use a Royal mail service for an item of that value. For items over £150 you must have a signature available online and RM do not guarantee that. You will need a courier.

Secondly, yes you will need to declare the value accurately as otherwise you will be committing fraud against HMRC, and that is a very serious offence. The buyer will be liable to all sorts of duty and taxes on arrival, depending n his state. However that is up to the buyer to pay and is nothing to do with you.

  • You must declare the correct value but don't see what this has got to do with HMRC, the goods are being exported and they will already have had VAT paid on them in this country anyway.
I'd recommend a UPS service through transglobalpremium , I find they have the best rates to the US, and you will get a signature on delivery.

THe CN22 is a UK form and the seller signs it to confirm to HMRC that the info declared is true.

Just adding to what soo says, the CN22 is RM customs form so if you are going to use another postal service, you will need their customs declarations. Most good courier websites give you the links to download the forms and there can be lots, so load up the paper!

Thank you, I always forget that the CN22 is a Royal Mail form.

RM is the exception in having its CN22 form attached to parcels with no record being kept if the parcel goes missing.

Carriers normally ask for several copies of your invoice or details of the shipment on their forms. Some are kept by the carrier others are used for customs clearance. Apart from the legal/moral side of under declaring to save the recipient money, your parcel will be under insured.

I think the US parcels attract charges if the value is over USD 100 - maybe others can confirm or correct this.
  • I would use https://www.gwizzcouriers.co.uk to send that to the USA, they have the best insurance prices around
