Jobs via word of mouth?

I know companies that NEVER advertise, but just ask current employees to recommend friends, family and neighbours, some even give the employee a bonus for recommending some-one who is then successful at interview. Before entering public service i worked in the private sector for 20 years, I only had one interview in all that time and that was only because I wanted to see what it was like to get interviewed. I felt bad when I got the Job and then turned it down.0

Yep - its quite common. I used to think it was 'unfair' but as a department head, if you know someone is right for your department, then you will begin to 'head hunt' by word of mouth first, this does save time and money.'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' : Member number 632

Cheaper for the company to employ through networking, agency fees are high.
I'm in IT and see this also. It should be noted that it is self regulating, lets face it you won't recommend people who were difficult to work with.0 -
It is very common and a lot of companies encourage this with certain schemes such as "Refer a Friend". Where an employee of a company recommends somebody they know for a vacant position and if that person is successful in landing the job, the referrer gets a nice little lump sum paid to them. It's obviously cheaper than agency fees and the employee gets a nice little earner for just forwarding on a vacancy in their company. I also believe this can drive up the salary being offered for a position, as thousands of pounds aren't being fore-casted to be given to agencies.
This is how I found my new job!Competition Stats:

We have an refer a friend bonus on a sliding scale from 1k to 5k depending on grade of role. Which is a lot less than what an agency wouldn charge.0
