My second job came as a result of working with somebody who then left the business we were working for and a few months later she needed an assistant so called me.

When I was unemployed a couple of years ago I had a three month group review thing at the JCP, and they had a pie-chart showing where jobs are advertised, and I believe it was around 50% aren't advertised at all. I remember being really surprised by this, and would definitely consider making more speculative applications in the future, if looking for a job.

Well word of mouth is probably the best way of getting anything, but a while ago i got some cv's printed off and went round local industrial estates and gave in my cv, many had no vacancies but always best to be pro active rather than inactive.

I play in a local sports tournament once a week and get to meet and know various people from different fields, as well as getting to know my team mates very well. As I have childcare qualifications, many parents and school staff actually play the sport too and keep me aware of potential vacancies in schools that might interest me.

Whilst not all of these potential vacancies have arisen, many ahve and it's nice to know that I am aware of them before they are actually advertised and know of the school, parent's views on it etc before I apply. It all helps :)

this is why it's always easier to get a new job if you are already in a job. When you are out of the loop by being unemployed then you don't get to hear about these opportunities :(

Word of mouth is key for me, I rarely advertise roles now and If I do I advertise on the digital equivalent Linkedin.

One of my connections recently stated that he was being made redundant and with a week he had 3 job offers to muse over.

I asked in another group if anyone could reccomend a .net developer and within the hour I had hired a guy that came reccomended from people I respect.

Yes have seen this happen regularly, I saw it happen with our office staff, Made redundant on a Monday back working with a different company by the end of the week, they had contacts within other companies/customers
