Portsmouth to Caen Ferry

My Hubby and I have been asked on holiday to the south of France with the in laws.

We were planning on joining them in the second week which would be the 27th July.

I have looked on the Brittany Ferry website and they are quoting £450 for a return journey with car and reclining seats.

Surely this is far too expensive - even the week before is looking at about £300.

Can anyone suggest any where else I can try?

Thanks

You can try LD Lines which are usually much cheaper than Brittany Ferries, they go from Portsmouth to Le Havre.

  • It obviously depends which sailing you want, but I've had a quick look at Direct Ferries which quotes £411 for 2 daytime sailings with reclining seats: https://priclub.directferries.com/ferry/secure/2_booking_quote.aspx?stdc=DF10&orid=58-5&rrid=5-58&psgr=2&micr=0&midu=0

If you're not going over night you don't need to book seats; there's always plenty of space in the lounges. This would make things cheaper for you. Brittany Ferries are really expensive. We're going with them in May - but it gets you so much closer to your destination!

Doh - that link doesn't work! Here's the link to the search page instead: http://www.directferries.co.uk/portsmouth_caen_ferry.htm

  • Do you need to take the car ? what about flying down to the south of France - various budget airlines. Driving to the SOF will be time consuming if you're only going for a week

LD Lines is £255 for 2 adults, night time sailings but there are cheaper crossings around that date.

  • I just got a quick quote from Norfolk Line (Dover-Dunkerque) for that date and it was £77 return:

You don't get to reserve seats, but I would recommend Norfolk Line as I found the ferries to be very nice, new and clean.

we have used Norfolk line many times and have never had any problems, the ships have always been of a good standard and ontime. You can often get great deals even in the summer months ,, last june we had a car with 4 adults and the total cost? .. £35 return!
