PPI cancelled - can we still claim?

Hi
I've been going through my friends paperwork (and having mini-heart attacks) and found he has an MBNA credit card which he took out nearly 8 years ago specifically to pay for a holiday and which he is still paying back. On his May 2011 statement there is a charge for Payment Protection Cover for £12, interest charge of £33 and a minimum repayment of £47. His debt of £1500 was, at that point, reducing by £3 a month!! His August statement doesn't show the PPC charge and he seems to remember he was advised by another friend to call them to cancel it so his debt would reduce quicker (I've arranged a balance transfer so it will reduce even quicker now!) but he actually doesn't even know what the PPC was for or how he ended up paying it, other than it appeared on his statement each month for years.
Could he reclaim this, or does the fact he cancelled it change things? He's dyslexic and a single dad so tends to steer clear of all paperwork and trusts whatever people tell him to do....even if it means getting into debt - a credit card companies dream! I'm happy to deal with it for him but I'm not sure where to even start even after pouring over the information here given he has cancelled it.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

There is no reason why he (or you on his behalf) can not complain

Hi, further to the above we've now received a response from MBNA to our request for a copy of the original T&Cs but I'm not sure of what I'm reading. They've sent them but the application form my friend signed is very short (about three inches long) and appears to be a copy of the original he signed and returned, dated 2005, but with no tick box asking if he wanted PPI - just a 'yes' box to be ticked, asking if he'd read and understood the T&Cs of the PPI. This box was unticked. Where is the tick box asking if he wanted PPI?
Am I missing something or was it not on the forms in 2005 and it was assumed to be included? And why did he have PPI when he didn't tick this box? Would they have gone ahead with it anyway even if he didn't say he understood it or should they have only gone ahead with this box ticked?
Many, many grateful thanks for any responses.0 -
Sometimes the ppi is added at a later date so may not show on the application, send a copy of this to them with reasons for mis sell and see what they come back with.0

Thanks very much, I'll do this.0
