You really need to go into the police station, and report it over the desk as a crime.
You will of course have a Sort Code, Account Number and probably an Account Name.
I would start to run these through Google and various search results to get more information on the scams they run, and try to get some more information from them.
I would maybe even create a new email address, and email them from the advert as a potential buyer with a view to purchase an item through a Bank Transfer. I would them of course claim that i had been to the bank to pay the cash in, and the bank required more information such as XYZ information.
Though, at a guess. Your cash is gone, probably somewhere overseas. The scammer probably found a UK Mule to collect all the cash for charity donations, and to withdraw it and to send it overseas through Western Union etc.
Good luck anyhows.

Cheques are perfectly safe provided that you allow a minimum of 6 full working days from when they have been paid in to when you post the goods.
A cheque can still bounce after this 6 day period, but if it does so, it is the bank that has to accept the loss.
The only time this doesn't apply is if the person accepting the cheque knows that it is a fraudulent payment.
