I imagine that's hidden in some HEFCE guidance. Not something I know the location of, but they are linked to the regulations.
  • The current update is this. Even though my son's course qualifies for a student loan - his college is a privately funded institution and is not bound by the same restrictions as a publicly funded university. His college is partnered with a university and they are the awarding body for his degree, but they have no leverage to make the college abide by normal rules.
So he is stuck in a loop-hole that no-one anticipated - he is only entitled to the old fees because he is a continuing student, but the college can charge the new fees.
He will also continue to only get the lower maintenance loan, even though he's on the new higher fees and should have access to the new maintenance loan arrangements.
So he misses out both ways. So his continued education is potentially in jeopardy as he has no option but to try to raise the £2,200 shortfall.
Apparently this problem may affect many students, depending on how many other colleges fall into this category.
And I've been told it affects not just current second years, but current first years as well. And they could potentially have two years' worth of shortfalls.
I have been advised to appeal to my local MP to ask the Government to make an urgent amendment to the student loan guidelines to get them to either a) allow students to access the new loans or b) enforce the colleges to stick within the intended rules.
I feel this issue needs ramping up now with some speed, so if any of you MSE devotees know a way to do this, I would be grateful.
Any comments would be really helpful as well, just in case I have misunderstood any of the information I have been given so far.

    What's the college?

PM if needed. That doesn't sound right to me at all.
  • Taiko - I have sent you two PMs on this, hope you get them as they're not showing up on my profile?
