New 12 Reg

A I understand, 12 reg cars are not released until the 1st March.

I was looking on a dealer forecourt and noticed a row of new 12 reg cars at the back with their number plates on already. So what is stopping anyone from driving these on the road before the 1st of March?

They are registered but presumably cannot be taxed and insured before the 1st March.
  • The dealer isn't allowed to relese them until the 1st, only time they will be on the road before then is on trade plates.

Although this is the legal standpoint, I've seen plenty of new plate cars on the road without trade plates a few days before they are released! I'm ex-DVLA and there was very little that was done about it despite people ringing to complain!

  • When I worked in the motor trade, it was common practice to deliver brand new cars to the homes of their new owners a few days before the start of the new registration year as some people claimed they wanted to drive their new cars a minute after midnight on the 1st.

    It still is.

No car keys or a locked gate perhaps?
