Selling train tickets on ebay

Hi!
My other half has would up with a train ticket from London to Grimsby that she couldn't use. So she advertised it on ebay and has just received the following ...

"Message from: David Million. Internal Control Manager, GNER Ltd, York HQ. Replies should be sent to Email: David.Million@gner.co.uk With reference to the rail ticket currently advertised for sale on eBay. Please note that it is against the conditions of issue to transfer any unused or partly used rail ticket and that it is an offence contrary to the railway byelaws made under the Railways Act 1993 and the National Conditions of Carriage to sell or buy any ticket (other than from an authorised person or an authorised ticket machine). Please also refer to the Prohibited Items ("Train Tickets") section on the eBay website for further details. I'm sorry to advise you that this item should be withdrawn from sale. Details of this ticket have been passed to our on train revenue protection team, however, no further action will be taken if the sale is withdrawn. Your assistance in this matter is appreciated. Kind Regards, David Million."

Is there a problem about selling tickets on ebay? Just about all tickets (travel, theatre, concert, football etc) say non-transferrable on them, but ebay is a good outlet if you can't use the things...

Any ideas?

Kev

withdraw the sale from ebay, otherwise ebay will do it for you as he will alert them. Then sell the ticket through other avenues.

Technically you can't sell tickets and things on ebay, often they actually say they are not transferable. Most of the time though you will get away with it.

There was a big cull recently where sellers of U2 tickets all got their auctions pulled and a warning put on their accounts, but i notice there are lots of U2 tickets up again.

I very often bid on tickets using a secondary id and reckon that about half the auctions I bid on get pulled before the auction finishes.

If you've had a warning then cancel your auction and sell elsewhere.

  • Thanks for the replies - do you have any suggestions where a good place to sell the ticket would be?

Strange ......... As it is normally EBay themselves that pull infringing items, then direct you to the likes of VERO members.

Now, given that there are train tickets currently for sale on EBay that have been running, 5, 7, and 10 days, I would leave the ticket for sale, but that's just me. :D

My dad usually claims part used tickets back from GNER - they charge him about £5 for the pleasure, but he usually gets a refund on about 1/2 the value (might only work with the more expensive tickets tho)

i think it's the luck of the draw whether it gets pulled or not. ive sold 2 train tickets which were more complimentary passes rather than a ticket paid over the counter, but they were still 'not for resale'. i think it helps if they are for something like the gatwick express rather than the 4.15 from manchester.

i had one withdrawn but it was after the auction had ended and i had been paid so strangely they reimbursed me my listing fee, final value fee and technically withdrew the auction from the system. it meant i sold it for free - hardly a deterrant!!

im a bit sceptical of how the withdrawn auction business works anyway. ive had a back issue of a magazine withdrawn because it was reported as being of a adult nature. i was selling and continued to sell another 20 issues of the same magazine at the same time, and that one was probably the least adult out of all of them. the only difference was that one issue was being sold by someone else as well, i dare say it was them that reported mine so they would sell theirs at the higher listing price.
