Putting up window boxes - how?

We are looking to put up 3 large window boxes on the first floor window sills of our house. Our house opens directly out onto the pavement so passers by will be walking almost directly under them. Can we safely put them up there ourselves ( all the houses with them here seem to have iron railss drilled into the brickwork to keep them safe and is that something we can do, or do we need to get a professional in?
Does anyone have any tips please?

there are various ways of doing it. here is one way.
always try and use two ways of fixing. double fixing.
ie hooks and eyes, as a safety measure.Get some gorm.0 -
Thanks Ormus. We plan on having them resting on the window sill but with something in front of them to secure them ( I would like it to be as unobtrusive as possible ), rather than drilling the actual boxes into the wall. It's a brick victorian house if that makes a difference.0
