A bit of a strange/contradictory question. But I have a lovely recipe for Lamb Shank, but was horrified at the cost of the Shank, £10 for 2. Waitrose and Tesco prices.
Does anyone know of anywhere cheaper that sells it, or alternatively a different cut of lamb that will go with the lamb shank sauce?
Thanks

I get mine from the butchers they're usually about £3odd each but usually bigger than the ones I've seen in the supermarket. Two average sized ones will do 2 meals for me and DH so not too bad for an occasional treat. Lamb shanks tend to be slow cooked so depending on the recipe perhaps you could try it with lamb shoulder which is also a slow cook joint.0

£10 for two???
Lamb is rising in price and it's probably the wrong time of the year to buy it fresh, price-wise.
Just looked - yes, they are £9/kilo at Tesco and £9.99 or £11.97 pre-packed.
Even more expensive at Asda: £9.99/kg from the butchery counter.
Same at Sainsbury's.
Lamb is very expensive at the moment!
I would go for shoulder - very very tasty when slow cooked at 160C.
Frozen lamb shanks seem to be around £6-7/kg, because they will have been packed and in the supply channels long before the recent price rises.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
The frozen ones (in mint/rosemary sauce) from Aldi are very tasty.
OH bought a couple of fresh ones from Sainsbugs last week for well over £6:eek: and they were no bigger than the Aldi ones @ around £4.Normal people worry me.0 -
I use shoulder of lamb when making stews casseroles etc (or if really broke - neck of lamb). but, a nice breast of lamb rolled and tied for you by the butcher roasts beautifully and would go with a sauce.0

When I worked in a butcher's (more than a few years ago) we sold lamb shanks at 15p each!!
If only we could turn back time, eh?0 -

Thanks all,
I spoke to the butcher who said shoulder shanks are cheaper than leg shanks.

Will see how the recipe goes, it is in the oven!0 -
