its not the damage you can see but the damage you cant see0

If the insurer say it'll be a write off, can you cancel the claim and tell them to forget about it? So as to sort it out privately and and not pay an excess?0

The car itself isn't worth more than about a grand. If the repair costs £500 it'll be written off.
As said, with an impact like that, it might have suspension issues or need a new support bar for the bumper.
On the plus side you can have a wing for £36 in what seems to be the right colour http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Vectra-b-driver-offside-front-wing-blue-/320753271310?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aae62820e

Plus new bonnet - Vectra bonnets are made of aluminium, and are very fragile (this one would definitely be out of shape) and almost impossible to repair.
Plus tens of different plastic clips and screws that hold all this stuff together.
It all adds up very quickly unfortunately.
It's a write off I'm afraid."Retail is for suckers"

Perhaps, but it does look like a glancing blow so I would hope they are OK (but only closer inspection will tell)
Bonnet looks fine from that photo.0
