Gift for a new mum?

My friend is due to give birth this week, & as they will have everything they need for the baby, & will probably be drowning in baby gifts from other friends & family, I thought it might be nice to get something for her. (just realised I wasn't even considering getting the new dad a gift, though he will probably be happy with a beer!)
Anyway, does anybody have any ideas of something nice, I was thinking along the lines of bath stuff or something so she can pamper herself a bit, but thought bath stuff is a bit predictable.
I don't want to go mad, will probably spend up to £10.

How about a selection of meals they can chuck in the microwave - like casseroles, shepherds pie, lasagne etc. I'm sure they will be very much appreciated in the first few weeks, so they don't have to think about cooking for themselves.
Or a nice photo frame and/or album for the numerous baby pics they are bound to take!
Maybe a nice bottle of wine and some chocs, but she might not be drinking if she's breastfeeding.
Sorry to be graphic but some nice pretty knickers for when she's finished bleeding. I was glad to see the back of the old tatty knickers when I'd finished after mine were bornHere I go again on my own....0 -
Dont know how much you want to spend but facial , manicure massage et, or vouchers towards this. Maybe a gift card so she can treat herself to something or nice smellies for a relaxing bath etc0

How about baby sitting vouchers?....house work vouchers?..ironing vouchers?..dinner vouchers.
I gave my friend a mixture of them printed off my computer and she was thrilled.
I made up dinner vouchers for a weeks worth of dinners for when her hubby went back to work and I just delivered them every day. (luckily she doesnt live very far and I just popped my dinner on low and delivered theres..just dont go in and have a chat otherwise you'll probably not really helping much). It wasnt much more effort just to cook for two extras and not too costly either as I stuck to basic foods like shep pie, casseroles etc.
I also put in a few laundry basket of ironing vouchers (why I dont know because I HATE ironing and have a huge pile of my own lol)
and a first baby sitting voucher for an evening.0 -

What about a cinema voucher (and an offer to babysit) for a few months down the line?
Also wanted to say - Sallys Savings, I would have been thrilled beyond words if I'd had a friend like you to cook dinner for a week after my babies were born!0 -
There is a similar thread here which has lots of ideas - not all of them costing the earth.
I agree with BusyLizzie, time is something that is in very short supply and help around the house and doing odd jobs is as good, if not better, than an expensive bottle of bubbly. Just remember not to be too intrusive and take your lead from Mum and Dad.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -
If you wanted to buy something how about a Next voucher - that way mum can either get something for herself or something for the baby as she prefers. The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0

Thanks everyone  (couldn't get all the thanks buttons to work on my PC at the moment). Some good ideas there.
She has just had a baby girl, so I will be off to a suitably money-saving shop later for a gift & a card0
