  • Well I took him to be neutered today and he was x-rayed at the same time and he does have hip dysplasia. It's not severe but it's there :(

Sorry to hear that, but don't sweat it. If it's not severe it may not even be a problem, although presumably the fact that you had suspicions means that it might. The key thing is you're insured and you wouldn't know to look at her that our girl had 2 new hips before she was 2 years old.

We have a Abruzzi Pastorale or Maremma, 6 year old !!!!!, 57kg. A couple of years ago, she was x-rayed and we were told she had hip dysplacia by the vet. About 10 weeks ago, she tore her cruciate ligament, so needed an operation to repair it. The Orthopaedic vet who operated on her, looked at the x-rays and said that the hip was not as much a problem as we had been told.

If it was from 'responsible' (anyone who crosses isn't responsible imo) breeders then the parents would have been hip scored, pra clear etc. If your that worried you could pay to get the dog hip scored but not all vets are able to score you often need to go to a specialist.

Quite frankly judging from today's update on the scandal of pedigree dogs, most breeders are far more irresponsible than could be believed and anyone who crosses has a fair old clue!

I wouldn't say "anyone" who crosses. Breed an unhealthy line of Cocker Spaniels with an unhealthy line of Poodles and you don't miraculously get a healthy Cockapoo. I'm sure some of the crossbreed out there are done with good intentions in mind, to fix the issues in the purebred breeds, but not everyone who crossbreeds does it for the good of the dogs - "designer crosses" have a big price tag on them nowadays.

Hip displasia can come in many forms and need not limit the dogs mobility or lifestyle - so don't panic just yet.
I knew a GSD x Collie, x-rayed at 9 mths and found to have severe HD, he lived a happy and full life and died aged 14 years :) His owner was careful not to over exersice but he ran about with other dogs and went for a swim most days.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better after reading some of your posts.
I'm just going to let him be himself and enjoy life.

With most breeds there are irresponsible breeders an unfortunately, contary to what his previous owner thinks, Jeffrey came from one of those:(

I would never have chosen this breed or paid the amount of money his previous owners paid but we love him to bits and wouldn't be without him for anything:D
