PPI Reclaimed but added onto Credit Card??

I'm absolutely fuming at the moment. Last week I received a cheque for £342.80 from my credit card company, I didn't really get a letter explaining what it was for just a cheque saying please find this as settlement, I presumed it was for my PPI claim. I cashed this cheque at my bank which is the obvious thing to do.

I went on my credit card today to cheque my balance and make a payment. I should owe the £420, my balance now stands at £766, they have added the cheque they gave me onto the balance. I phoned them up and the guy basically says this is right. He said if I hadn't cashed my cheque my credit card balance would have been reduced by £342.80 (which makes sense, even though I haven't had a letter explaining this), however he says that because I cashed it it has been added on to my account. I beleive they should have left my account at £420 and he doesnt understand this.

I asked to speak to somebody else and he put me through to someone in PPI who spoke really strong Indian so I couldn't really understand what she was saying, she went off to speak to somebody else and hung up on me.

I'm so angry and I'm sure they can't add it back onto my card. Am I right?? I'm going to ring them again on my dinner.

  • It COULD have been a "credit card cheque", thought this had died out, but in years past banks used to send these out to encourage you to go out and buy something, they are just a further advance on your borrowing, so by cashing it all you did was draw down an extra £342.80.

However, work it out, your cc balance has gone up by £342.80, but the money is presumable in your current a/c, so just pay it off the card and you are back where you were, no extra debt.

Yeah apart from I gave my mum some as a treat and shes been struggling so I'm going to be well out of pocket now aren't I. Can they just send a cheque like that through the post and not even say its a CC balance cheque?

I called back on my dinner hour and got through to a nice man who understood where I was coming from, looked into it for me, said it was an error on their part and he will have it sorted by the end of the week :)
