Disability grant?

I have been told today that I may be able to claim DLA for DD1. And if accepted she will be classed as disabled, may only probably get lower/middle rate. But suppose it's worth trying, money will help a lot for her needs.

My question is, would we also be entitled to some sort of grant to adapt our home (our own), she has a bed but it had to be built above her wardrobes as bedroom is so small, no normal bed fits in there, and I often find her asleep on her floor on towels. Yes we could move to a bigger house, but we couldn't possibly afford it, Our options would be extending over garage for extra bedroom or converting the attic.

Any advice?

Thank You

  • Grants are usually to accommodate a disability - so a downstairs bathroom/wetroom, or a downstairs bedroom if the person is a wheelchair user. I don't know of any grant that would help in the circumstances that you describe.

However, there is a charity that helps to make the bedroom of a disabled child more attractive. It usually means decorating, but you can only ask! They use local volunteers to do any work needed. It might be worth contacting https://www.wellchild.org.uk
  • I think it depends on what the disabilities are and how they affect her, as to if they would allow a building. We're currently being assessed for my son but one of the reasons is that he shares a room with his twin

    Thank You for your replies.

It's difficult because DD has a mental condition not a physical one. It affects her/us as she is not rested, we can not allow her to share with DD2 due to her condition, and DD2 could not possibly sleep in such a high bed as she is only 5. It really is heart breaking, just don't know what to do. We don't have much money left at the end of the month to enable us to save for a conversion, would cost thousands. :(
  • Its best contact your local social services and get assessed on your needs

If your child is now disabled and you get dla you might get higher tax credits if you are entitled to them.

Social Services have just today stepped out, they did not help us one bit anyway. Weird thing SS agreed with is about her room, she even said perhaps we give our bedroom up for DD1 and we slept downstairs in living room (all downstairs is open planned), has crossed my mind, but DH would not go for that.

you are claiming benefits for being disabled?

Now you want to claim disabled benefits for the oldest kid?

Your 16 yr old niece is pregnant and you are on here asking about what benefits she is entitled to and how you will not allow her to do a Prince's Trust course because she is pregnant?

Then you want to know what house she is entitled to and whether they will furnish it for her?

Looking back at your posts, I'm wondering if I've strayed into an episode of Shameless:eek:
When your life is a mess, stop and think what you are doing before bringing more kids into it, it's not fair on them.

I can't really see how a bedroom can be big enough to take a cabin bed/high sleeper but not big enough to take a normal bed.

The turn2us website has a grant checker.

Like others, I can't see how it can take a high bed but not a low one.

If it's because the space is competing with storage, then sort the storage out - reduce belongings (who has multiple 'wardrobes'?, I've only ever had one), move the storage out somewhere else, buy a bed which has drawers underneath, mount cupboards up on the wall above the bed, switch to a pull out futon or sofa bed? Encourage her to sleep on Roll out futon cushion (that's what I have for guests, it just unfurls on the floor and is less than a single bed in width). etc

how big is your other childss room? couldnt you swap them over?
as has already been said ... a cabin bed is the same size as a standard single , so if that fits, a standard single would too

    Right on man!

This typifies what I have been saying about people WANTING to be categorised as 'disabled'.

Shame on the poster for trying to screw over the country!
