Chicken pox....how to stop a four year old scratching?

Woke up this morning to find my poor little four year old covered in chicken pox. How do I stop him scratching them? I'm using lacto calamine at the moment and it seems to be taking away the worst of the irritation......but do any of you have any better ideas?

Thanks,

Pink

    Thanks kabie,

I'd completely forgotten about piriton......it's so long since my older two had them.

have him wear socks on his hands!
My son sometimes has to wear bandages because of eczema, and to get him used to it he used to 'practice' with socks. However I dont know if chickenpox should be covered. I remember as a kid being encouraged to get plenty of 'fresh air' when i had chickenpox.

I was told to wear soft gloves on my hands at night to stop scratching in my sleep, and I was 22!

I didn't get chicken pox till I was 24. Unfortunately I had a very severe dose of it and the spots got into every orifice. The most painful ones were in my throat. My GP kept coming out to check up on me (without me calling) and he told me to take piriton & ibrofen. My mother also told me to add a capful of dettol to the bath 3 times a day. I didn't have any itching at all and the spots that were submerged in the bath water for long periods cleared up within 2 weeks. The ones on my face which I could only dab with dettol water took 6 weeks to clear.

When my daughter got it at 3 I used the dettol in the bath water, piriton and ibrofen and she didn't complain of any itchiness. She was clear within a week too.

you can get calomine and aqueous cream all in one - really worked on my dd, she didnt scratch at all - and was easier to apply, as you could rub it on, rather than using plain calomine lotion, which goes all flaky, and i think, adds to the itchy feeling
