How much a house sold for at auction?

Hello, is it possible to find out how much a house sold for at auction? Not sure if the sold price is available to the public or how to find out? I am just curious - we were really interested in a house which was being auctioned today. The guide price was within our budget but we presumed it would be a waste of our time as it would probably sell for a lot more. Maybe that was or wasn't the case! Just checked the auctioneers website - it says "sold" - would they disclose the price if I phoned them or is it top secret? Thanks.

Yes. Post the address and I'll tell you what it sold for, however, it's likely that if it was at auction today it could take a few days to update the database I use.

Some auction houses publish results post auction.

Auction prices tend not to be published by the Land Registry.
  • Thank you JQ, the address is 122 HIGH STREET, GARLINGE, MARGATE, KENT, CT9 5LP. Auctioneer Clive Emson.

Yep, it's not been updated yet. I'll have a look again tomorrow. Incidentally, they tried to sell it in June 2010 with the same Auctioneer, but it failed to meet the reserve of £110,000.

    It sold for £85,000 yesterday.

You could always approach the auctioneer and get them to send a letter to the purchaser on your behalf. If the purchaser is a developer and you offer to buy the papers off them for £5,000 they may well accept. Making £5,000 for a days work is quite appealing to many people. You'd still need to complete the purchase in the required timeframe (28 days normall) and the house would cost you £90,000.

Would you have paid the 85k?
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
  • Thank you for this information, JQ - much appreciated. Maybe I'm kicking myself now for not going to the auction. It sold for the guide price which we could have afforded. Will think about contacting the auctioneer as suggested.

If you'd been there though, the other bidder might have been prepared to go to £105k. It only sold at £85k because you weren't there.
