Discrimation by Halifax against Scottish children?!

I had a Children's Regular Saver at 10% for my daughter for just over 7 years. It was closed because HBOS decided to no longer offer that product. Fair enough and that's in the terms. However I received no notification, just found out because I saw they had converted her money to a Young Saver account.

When I reserached it I wanted to open a Kid's Regular Saver account at 6% which was almost it's equivalent. The information online said I had to open this account in a branch. When enquired at my Bank of Scotland branch I was told that it was only available to Halifax customers as it was a Halifax branded account and it had to be done via one of their local branches. When I asked wher my local branch was I was told England!!

I called the Halifax Savings helpline and they confirmed that as I live in Scotland I cannot open an account. I am astounded that in this day and age my daughter is experiencing what is tantamount to discrimination. She can only earn 3% on her savings as an HBOS customer and not the 6% available to children in England and Wales.

This is especially infuriating as we have HBOS customers for many years. I have emailed them online to complain about this. I'm simply gob-smacked.

No, discriminatuion is making English students pay to go to your universtiies when you let french and other EU students in for free. THAT is discrimination.

Having gotten that bugbear off my chest, I can understand your disappointment. But like the islanders do, you just need to do a bit of forward planning. Next time you venture south of the border you can set up another in the nearest Halifax branch in the area.

If you want your complaont to get action/notice, email won't do you will need to out pen to paper.

As others have said, this isn't discrimination. Go to a Halifax branch (or get someone else to), otherwise just find an account you can open easily.

"let" should really be "are forced to"

According to EU Law, it isn't discrimintation (go figure). The Scottish govt would quite happily make EU students pay, but our european overlords won't let them. It's also important to note that the requirement is one of residence, not nationality.

But the "European overloards" haven't forced the Scottish government to make English students pay to go to a Scottish Uni.
They could easily allow English students attend free of charge.

But all residents of England are residents of the EU, so actually it contravenes EU law and will hopefully be challenged.

As England is being forced to keep Abu Qatada by EU law, England is part of the EU.

the Scottish govt could very easily have extended that to english students under current EU law should they want to. But have chosen for political reasons not to. Lets hope to see a change here and soon. Before BOS is forced to give English accts to scottish residents.

I personally don't knwo anyone these days (although my elderly MIL was one later in her life) who doesn't travel the country from time to time incl crossing the border from England to/from wales or Scotland. So, just put in a little forward planning like the Scottish islanders do as when they pay for a ticket to the mainland, they pack in everthing they can to get their money's worth.

and BTW, I am neither englsh nor do I live in england (but have in the past).

Bank of Scotland customers get 3.30% for a 12 month term deposit.

Haifax customers get 2.25% for the same 12 month terrm.

    Discrimination? Give over.

The Scottish tax payers didn't pay anything to the banks then. So glad to hear that....

No it's not, if you let our students in for free we would let yours in, no one is discriminating unlawfully.

Actually we don't let our students study free we pay their fees for them, other EU countries pay them too, only you lot choose not too.
