I don't know if I have just started to notice these threads or if there has been an upsurge of late but how should we treat them?
I take the view that they are a form of forum abuse and if they are posted anywhere but the Referrers board then they should be reported as such.
Could someone on the forum team please clarify their position on these petition threads.

I agree - they should be on the referrers board. But on the flip side, if they are all on the referrers board (ie all in one place) people aren't going to go out of their way to find them. However, if they are placed under a relevant section/heading, then forum users who "care" about the subject will vote.
If a rule is made that they must all be in one place, then threads could start appearing saying "go to such and such a post and sign my petition" which is really the same thing?0
