public liability for village market?

Hi, hope I'm posting this in the right section.
Last year my daughter and I ran a small monthly 'market' in our local village hall and we intend to start up again next month. We have about 12 tables/stalls selling local crafts, produce, and second-hand/car-boot items - these vary every month - plus refreshments. We also combine our 'market' with the village's easter and xmas fayres.
I am now hearing that these events should have public liability insurance or the stall-holders should. Can anyone tell me if this now a legal requirement and could we be closed down ....or even prosecuted?
thanks

    If you are hiring from the village hall, they will have cover.

  • thanks for your reply, that it was I thought initially, yes the village hall has insurance but doesn't that just cover the building and its contents e.g tables and chairs etc? It wouldn't cover injury caused by goods sold at a market or fayre.

    Ignore this.

    The village hall's public liability cover won't cover the hirer's public liability!

    Although not a legal requirement, you do need this cover, (or face bankruptcy if someone has a big claim against you) - see a local broker (not swintons).

    And how exactly would you know this without inspecting the hirers policy.
    As this is a money saving forum I would advise you speak to the hirer of the venue first about what cover they hold with respect to hiring the hall before buying cover.

    How can the hirer's insurer agree to cover any and all hirer's public liabilities!

    Claims would be made against the vendor, not the building!
  • I have checked and its only the building and its contents that are insured.

    That is the norm.

    (Ignore the "advice" from vax2002 - anyone can post here!)
  • There is no legal requirement for it however there can be a contractual requirement for it. If you speak to a good local broker (not swinton) they should be able to get a reasonably priced product for you

    As said check first with the hirer, they say no, now you will have to make a decision if you think the risk is acceptable based against the premium.
    It does carry some risk of inviting claims as well, so if you decide to voluntary obtain insurance, keep it very quiet indeed, that part is basic human common sense.
