HELP-One way car hire Spain to France

I need to do a one way hire from Barcelona to Carcassonne later this week and Hertz have quoted 1000 Euros , most of which is a drop off charge!!! Other operators are refusing even to quote. Any advice from fellow MSExperts greatly appreciated.

to see if you can get a cheaper price.

Perhaps it may be cheaper, but impractical, to hire a car to the last town in Spain and then get a taxi to the first town in France to pick up another car.
