need help selling Cartier watch

I bought the watch in 1980 when I was working in Saudi Arabia. Its never been worn and looks like new but isn't working which is understandable as it's never been serviced or had battery changed. I've got the Guarantee/Certificate of Origin card with my name, date etc on it, haven't got the original box. I've phoned Cartier and it will cost me £££ for servicing, valuation etc. I don't want to spend time or money on it and would prefer to just put it on ebay "as is" does this sound reasonable?

Personally I would avoid ebay like the plague for a named item like this and would probably use a bricks and mortar auction house where people can see and inspect the goods before they bid.

  • i think you should have at least the battery replaced before you sell, if the old battery has leaked on the internals it would cost a bit to put right
  • It'd cost over £100 to have the battery replaced by Cartier and watch might not be worth that much if battery has leaked and caused damage. I could get it done cheaper but if anyone else other than Cartier does it the guarantee is invalidated.

But is it still under guarantee after 32 years?
  • Its a lifetime guarantee covering manufacturing defects,

How much are you expecting to get for it?
  • My advice would be to ask london watch shops for a quote on what they would pay for one with/without a working battery. This would then allow you to price whether the replacement is worthwhile.
