Howdens Kitchens?

Hi, i used to work for howdens many years ago they used to be part of MFI (MADE FOR IDIOTS ). i would look @ IKEA kitchens they have a 25 year guarantee. :j
    much better quality thicker carcases

Problem I had with an ikea kitchen in my let property is that all the measurements (as with most ikea products, e.g. beds) are slightly out of synch compared to their competitors. This gets annoying as you can only buy Ikea parts, such as worktops, doors, shelves etc to complete your kitchen. You can buy 700mm worktops from other suppliers but there will be a large overhang on on top of your units.

The other issue I had is that the Ikea base units push right back to your wall without any space for pipework. This was terrible, in the end had to take half the kitchen back and replace with Howdens units as it would have meant cutting in to the Ikea base units but pipe work would have been visible. Not good.

Obviously this was in 2009 so unsure if Ikea have changed their design since then.

As many people have posted about Ikea, you can get a wider worktop, and any decent joiner should be able to leave a service gap and the worktop goes right to the wall. Many people have done this, there are posts on the many threads in regard to ikea/howdens kitchens.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

    Hi all,

I've had a quote from Howdens for my kitchen, approx 12 units, 3 of which wrap around an American Style Fridge Freezer (bumped up the cost a little).

Total cost with box standard worktops is £3718 (excluding appliances - I will be sourcing from elsewhere).

What's your thoughts on the amount of this quote? It has come through my fitter who has just passed on the Howdens sheet to me (I don't know if they have a separate one with lower cost etc marked up.. may be some fitters on here can help with that..)

The kitchen style is Saponetta Light Oak.

I have considered Wren but after reading their reviews I think that option is a disaster waiting to happen, especially with the nearest store 100 miles from me... will give them a miss I think..

    Hi terry,
I got a quote for a saponetta beech from howdens and it came in at about £3300 for about 8 units, bosch standard appliance pack(oven/hob/hood), sink(no tap), one of the units is a euro mid size oven housing with drawer pack below it, one of them was also a tall 70/30 larder style to cover combi boiler, there was also a 1000mm three drawer unit below hob, with the rest made up of 500/600/800 base units, splashback/worktop/professional v fit flooring all in basalt slate honed.
We could also get the the same style of kitchen from a company called Anderson's kitchens who source from Magnet for about £300 less but included Neff appliances, very tempted with it, we're just waiting on different fitters getting back to me.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

    smitchy,

Thanks for that. You appear to be getting a decent deal there if the £3300 includes your hob, oven and fan (bosch too).

I was unsure if the £3718 for my 14 units was OK?.. I appear to have nearly double the units as you so it looks not too bad price wise.. wonder if anyone else has similar requirements :-$..

Base Units I will have are:
    1 x 2150mm Oven housing with 900mm aperture
    1 x 500mm 4 Drawer set
    1 x 800mm 2 Drawer Pan
    2 x 931mm corner units
    1 x 600mm sink unit
    1 x 600mm door for integrated dishwasher
    1 x 150mm wine rack
2 x 300mm Larders with LH and RH doors

    Wall units are;
    3 x 400mm RH and LH units
1 x 1000mm bridging unit (between larder, over american fridge)

My appliances I will source elsewhere and will be looking at a further £1350 for integrated dishwasher, sink, 5 gas hob, 700mm extractor fan and double oven.

Anyone got a price for a similar requirement?

  • We bought one about 4 yrs ago and are very pleased with it. Need to go through someone in the trade. We got our through a friend who is a kitchen fitter who also fitted ours.

When they did the plans be careful of fittings like taps. Because I didn't specify which ones they put in the most expensive! Quieried that and the price soon came down. I had a metal corner unit that is like a cage that opens right out that I use for my grocery cupboard. It was brand new design and cost quite a bit but is the best thing ever. We call it the magic cupboard!!!

  • Thanks mumof3plus, did you have a cost I can compare my quote against?

  • sorry can't remember the price as we paid the fitter all the money but there were costs for tiling the kitchen walls, floors and putting in a new downstairs cloakroom suite plus his fees. With the price of the kitchen and all above was about 8k but that was 4 yrs ago. Sorry can't be much more help, seem to remember it was reasonable though.
