You don't: just upload Lion onto a USB pendrive and do a clean install from it0

I did wonder, when you visit apple they do say as my OP. which is why i guess ebay has lots os SL for sale
from apple..
To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store. Learn more>Div 1 Play Off Winners 2007

The problem is that you have nowhere to download Lion from unless you have the app store? Which as far as I'm aware only comes with SL...0

( But you can use a version of SL that has already been used )0

That would be the most logical solution.
I would just simply DL the .dmg file of Lion and use Disk Utility to create a bootable USB drive0 -
I am having the same issue - need to get to SL to get iCloud for my new iPhone. Best deal for SN seemed to be on eBay (£80 ish for a multi-licence "family" version). However called Apple on their 0800 number and explained that I want to upgrade from 10.5.X, but cannot find SL on their site, and they are sending the disks for £21.0

Go to your nearest Apple store and they will sort it our for free, at least that is what they did for my DD when she found she couldn't install newly purchased Mountain Lion.0

Make sure you know your current OS version - I did visit my Apple store where one of their Geniuses (that is what they refer to their sales staff as - its not a sarcastic comment!) - and he seemed to think that I could upgrade to Mountain Lion via iTunes for £13.99 from my 10.5 version. this is not the case, you need to be on 10.6 (Snow Leopard)0
