Old or new forum? Both poor

When I receive an email with a link to a subscribed thread, it takes me to the appropriate forum but apparently to a random post.
There appears to be no way to search for your own or your respondent's posts/threads. A forum search for my user name (even when I am logged in) produces zero hits.
There seems to be no way to follow a thread if the forum has too many contributors, presumably because there is not enough room to indent. Why not default to vertically linked posts with a marker in a thread and forget about the indenting?
I find it extremely difficult to negotiate my way around the forums to find what I want. Confusion reigns!
