I'm pretty sure I'm not dreaming this up, I read somewhere that if facebook was a nation, it would've been the third largest and then thinking to myself it wouldn't make a lot of difference to substitute mse for facebook :snow_grin

The great thing about MSE is that we can get real solutions for real problems.

Talking to someone across Europe on a chatroom about work is not that different from getting financial advice on here, meaning that both sites are doing the same thing, just in different specialisms.

MSE has helped me to save more than I was and to reach decisions. What has Facebook done for me?

I've never been interested in any of the "social media" sites, which just exist to gather information about their users to sell to advertisers.

The trouble is, I seem to spend far too long on various different forums, including this one.:(
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • My view is that MSE is the thinking persons Facebook.

I don't need to invite "friends" to respond to my views; the mere fact I have expressed a view is its own invitation for anyone to respond.

There is also the added satisfaction that I may have been able to help someone. If any advice I give is questionable then it will almost certainly be questioned.

If I have a question then there is a good chance someone will at least have a suggestion.

What more could anyone want from social media?

earth, flora, fauna and why, even hindsight has an account with facebook :snow_grin a bit like cartoons characters, lands and galactic objects like gilbertgradgrind, fifer, magyar and quasar having accounts here

Facebook is a revolutionary idea but ultimatly it is just a mechanism, it is not an article to which can be ascrbed motives unlike mse.

    agree :D taht's ^ spot on
  • I agree that mse rocks!

im not a big facebooker - just dont like the idea of everyone i know and many i dont know that well being able to see what im up to...not that i lead a very exciting life!

Which is another thing i hate about facebook - seeing how much 'better' everyone else's life is compared to mine!
And I hate the random pointless posts about what people are eating / doing right now
And the way that so many other sites are linking to fb so you have to have an fb account - NO thanks, netflixI dont want my fb friends to know what films I am watching...
And how people who hardly know each other become BFFs on facebook when they hate each other in real life !
oooh, think i need to deactivate my fb ac!!!! ;-) Now i remember why i dont go on it much!

Well this is what I do for a living; manage online social spaces - mostly for game developers. The difference between Facebook, Twitter et al and places like MSE is that the latter is a 'community' and the former are social networks. The difference often becomes clear when you look at the skill set of who does what in a company; those managing Facebook and Twitter presence are generally from a marketing background and those who manage forums, blogs, chat rooms etc often come from either an editorial background or even simply have a lot of experience running hobby communities.

I know Social Media Managers who sneer at forums and dismiss them as 'old fashioned'; however the point they miss is that people tend to stay in places where they can find like minded people in a place of 'purpose'. MSE is a very good example of this, as are a number of other places - in fact the most 'sticky' communities often revolve round the stars of the online games worlds.

Facebook will fade (everything does, including MSE one day) as people realise these soundbites of trivia are ultimately unsatisfying. Google+ has tried to fix some of the more glaring issues with FB, but I'm not sure it'll gain as much traction.
