When you spend between £100 and £30,000 on your credit card you are covered under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. That applies if the goods you buy are faulty or if products or services are not delivered but this is only applicable to Credit Cards.

I think the only protection you get with Debit Cards are for things like Fraud =/!

Ring and ask HSBC Phonebank what protection you get should anything happen.

The debit card chargeback scheme is VOLUNTARY and there are strict time limits for claims (perhaps 120 days ???). You may not even have been on holiday by the time the limit expires.

Why not pay £100 by credit card and the rest on debit card. You will then be legally protected for the full amount. (Strictly speaking you only need to pay 1p on CC to get full protection but it's best to remove as many obstacles as possible to any future s75 claim)

EDIT: As thenudeone says, ask to just put a deposit on the CC (like £10 or £100, and pay the surcharge), and then put the rest on your DC to get the full benefit of section 75 without the £250 cost.
