Clearing old papers today and I find a V5c signed and dated Jan 05 for scrapping a car.

I check the car tax website and it is unlicensed.

So I obviously still "own" it.

But what do I do? Forget it? I thought perhaps write a letter stating that I had come across the signed slip and was sending it to them but his will lead to our friends in Swansea sending the fine to collectors.

So I think it's best to forget it?

  • How havnt you had tax reminders etc?? Surly the dvla will wonder why it hasn't been taxed or sorn in 7 years?

I moved in early 2006. The tax expired on 31/12/04. And the car scrapped in Jan 05. The DVLA don't have anything to remind me of, but perhaps they have sent a fine or two.

Perhaps I should stick the slip in an envelope and post it to Swansea

Just bin it and forget about it, if they do ever catch up with you just insist that you sent it to them when you scrapped the car, its up to them to prove you didnt.

You could phone them and ask if it is registered in your name and old address. At this stage you don't have to tell them where you currently live... You could also ask if there was any fines issued and if those fines were taken to court in your absence.

Say you were just casually looking through your old cars on "vehicle enquiry" I do this with my old cars sometimes....and you noticed it was still registered but you had told them ages ago it was scrapped by returning the "sold to a motor trader" section of the V5.

It's been more than 6 years so there's not much chance they will try to fine you for it -again- If there has been no action for 6 years they can't start any action now. If you find it is still in your name, and they never took it to court. Then you could at least write a letter stating that you no longer hold any interest in the vehicle as it was scrapped in 2005.

The scrappers should have informed the DVLA that they had scrapped it.

Hopefully it was a reputable scrappy and not one who sold the wreck on or used it themselves to rebuild another motor.

electronic transfer of data for scrapping was in its infancy back then if at all ,i think most places were still using the fill in sheets that were posted to the dvla at the end of each week
personally i wouldnt do a phone call etc to the dvla as it amounts to the same thing as sounding the council out for an extension and we all know how intransient those pen pushers can be

Phoned the DVLA as the house holder who found the slip in the loft! They said to send the slip in with a note. I didn't give them any information but can see this would open a can of worms.
  • I traded in a moped in 2003 to a second hand bike dealer. For some reason at the time I gave them the whole V5. I never got a letter back from the DVLA saying I was no longer the registered keeper. From what I can remember anyway.

The tax expired at the start of 2004 and it still shows as unlicenced from 2004 on the tax disc enquiry site. Never had any comeback.
