I'm doing BA in English literature. Contact hours are: 9 hrs a week, but I'm doing a French module as well, so if I was doing all humanities, it would be 8hrs

Bsc Social work here.... (1st year) and 2nd and 3rd only get worse as i have placements...

4 modules each having a 2 hour lecture a week.... spread over 1.5 day a week currently. (Tuesday &1/2 Thursday)

each module requires ALOT of reading...

for one module there are weekly tasks that take 1 - 4 hours each... there have been 4 tests for this module, and there are 2 written assignments also.

for another there are guided learning sessions to be done at home which easily take 4 - 8 hours a fortnight... this module culminates in a day long classroom based test...

for one i am pulling together a portfolio that requires a reflective journal be written at least weekly, and has loads of other components... as well as needing to have interviews planned and conducted for the written assignments.... there are 4 for this module... as well as a presentation...

for the fourth there is a group presentation (it's not going well), and a written assignment.... the lecturer has invited in loads of really interesting guests to talk to us - which means that we have no time in class to lean all of the theories that we need to know, and as such had led to LOADS of reading to be done in my own time....

frankly right now i am struggling to find time to scratch my own !!!!!....

having said that i'm loving every minute of it, and wouldn't change it for the world, as i've always wanted to study to be a social worker...

  • I'm doing Law.
I have 15 hours of face to face lectures per week. (my lectures are between 1pm and 6pm)
I then read, which takes up about another 15 hours a week. Where after the lecture I read around the topic just discussed that day, then I also read before lectures, the stuff we will be going through.
I also do past exam papers as practice, which takes up about another 1 to 2 hours per week.
So in total around 32 hours a week. Some weeks it's more.
I also manage to hold down an 18 hour per week job, on the weekends.

My timetable changes every semester (so every 4 months) and I only have 10 teaching weeks per semester as well.

  • 11 hours a week, on Mondays (11-4), Tuesdays (10-5) and Thursdays (11-5), plus a lot of self-study in my own time. I'm a first year doing a social science at the University of Manchester. The earliest starts are 9am (brutal . . .) and the latest possible finishes are 6pm. Most universities will give you Wednesday afternoons off, with the intention (but no compulsion) that you will use that time for sports, volunteering etc. However, other than that, it's really very variable according to which university and which course, with science courses having lots of hours in labs, nursing etc. spending lots of time on placement and arts / humanities students spend lots of time reading.

You'll find that for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy etc the courses are very much f/t 9-5/6pm (with Wed afternoons off) and a solid 3 hours additional work is required every evening.

I'm a third year Economics with Econometrics student.
In first year I had about 10-11 contact hours and was supposed to do about 20-30 hours on top of that (I was a bad student back then lol). In second year I had 7ish contact hours with 40 hours work on top (did that) and in my third year I have more hours in one module than my sister had in her whole third year week. Yeah 8 hours a week this year, but that's due to my econometrics, which can be from 3-6 hours a week depending. Most third years have 4-6 hours a week from previous experience.
But on top of that, assuming this is a full time course and you want a full skill set for the job market, there are usually 3-4 hours a week available in the skills training departments (I think my uni has 3?) which would be beneficial, plus societies which are very useful for your academic performance if you join your subject one, as the motivated go there and associating with motivated people tends to lead to self motivation.

As others have already pointed out it depends on your uni and course.

I'm part time studying BA (Hons) Primary Education.

While I may only be in uni Monday 9.00 - 5.30 and Thursday 4 - 7 the amount of work I have to do at home is crazy. It's a 7 day a week course in my opinion. I also work casual hours in school as supply to bring in extra money and am just about to start a 6 week placement which means no income at all for that time.
