Fan stopped working in oven - cheaper to repair or replace?

Options
My fan has stopped working in my oven. :( For about a week, it made a whirry noise, so I realised something was up, and now it's not going round at all. Given that explanation, does anyone know what is likely to be wrong? I'm utterly useless with such things. :(

In terms of solutions, does anyone know how much it costs to have a new one installed? My current one is an Electrolux EOB 976, about 12 years old, and I am happy to replace it altogether as long as installation isn't prohibitively expensive compared to repairing the existing one. Mine is built in, electric, and has 4 hobs - presumbly I have to be careful that the one I buy is the right sort to replace it... I did manage to replace the element a year or so ago, but reading internet pages suggests that replacing the fan / motor, or indeed the entire appliance, would be much more complicated, so not something I'm prepared to have a go at...

Thanks for any guidance. :)

The fan in my oven did exactly this. I don't know what made me think of it ....... but I made sure it was turned off (!) then prodded all four of the fan blades with the tip of a carving knife. The fan had somehow become mis-shapen, and one of the blades had caught on the housing. It worked fine again for a while, then the same thing happened. Again I freed it, and now the process repeats every 3 to 6 months.

I'm not saying yours has the same fault, but it might be worth a try ........ :)
  • Haha it worked! :)

I poked the fan it with a little wooden stick, and it was stuck, perhaps just gunked up or something, hard to tell. But once I got it moving, and poked it round about 10 full revolutions, then I put the power back on and tried it, and now it works! Many thanks :)

That said, if anyone hs answers to the other questions above, I'd still be interested to hear them, a). in case mine keeps oing this too regularly, and b). because I'm interested! :)

Is it an oven, or a complete cooker? If just an oven, does it have any hob controls on it too?

If just an oven with no hob controls, they are dead easy to replace. turn off the power, remove the 4 screws that hold it in place and slide out. Disconnect from power.

    To replace, reverse the operation.
  • FYI, the oven is seperate to the hob, so you only replace the oven, open the oven door normally it's just fixed in with four screws (2 each side) into the unit (although i have seen some screwed to the worktop as well) & it should just slide out

I would have thanked you Jen but your button is missing lol (we posted together but as she says)
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Thanks, I have always (stupidly) assumed that the oven and hob are connected somehow, it never occured to me that they could both connect to the electricity supply separately so I could replace one without replacing the other. If it's that easy, then I will do it if the problem occurs again. I don't need a flash one, so it wouldn't cost much more than repairing mine, and sounds like a lot less hassle just to replace altogether.
