Help please....car oil problem!!!

Now everyones done telling you off for a silly mistake,
1) Get the car on level ground, leave it switched off for at least 10 mins, check the oil level on the dipstick (ENGINE OFF!!
) Make a mental note.
2) Drive around for a week/until your next fuel stop. Leave for at least 10 mins, then check the oil... Hopefully the level hasn't changed much!
Despite what Audi owners will tell you, healthy engines shouldn't use any oil, but a little bit, up to half a litre or so per thousand miles is considered acceptable. If you've not had this problem before in three years, then it's probably nothing. However, if it's due a service, GET IT DONE! Engines nowadays basically run forever so long as you DO NOT overheat them, and DO NOT run them out of oil. you came very close ot doing the second one!
Pay out for a good service ASAP, that will refreash the oil, re-set the oil level, and give your engine new filters. V. importnat maintenance to protect your reliable car.0 -
Yes, that is normal. What is not normal is for you to have the car running when you top up the oil.
Tell me, when you fill up with fuel, do you have the car engine running? No, I thought not, so why did you leave the car running and pour oil into the engine?
As i previously stated, my husband thought it would be ok, he is not a mechanic, and was obviously wrong to do this.
No..... i do not leave car running when filling up with petrol.0 -

You know that an MOT pass doesn't mean the car is healthy or in good condition? it simply means it met the safety requirements on the day.
No, the car has been serviced each year prior to MOT, it is now overdue though, the last one was done Dec 2010, I reaslise we should have it done, and will do so now asap (funds have just been very low recently). The only job we had to have done was a faulty boot release = £45, and tyres of course.
I do understand about the MOT test, but when i had it done in January, the tester commented to me that is was a "cracking little car, sounded and drove really nice"

Thank you, we checked the oil again this morning, and it was just below the max level, we will definitely keep our eye on it now.
I will do some ringing around tomorrow for prices for a service, we use a couple of garages so will try all of them.
I am glad we hopefully avoided a costly repair, the light has stayed off since putting the oil in - thankfully.
Many thanks for your advice, and everyone else who has taken the time to post, very grateful.0 -
Don't worry about the banter dizzy, even blokes have faults. :-)0

Engine will still be red hot. The oil level will be artificially high. You should really check when cold as I said (without having a go at the OP) :beer:Despite what Audi owners will tell you, healthy engines shouldn't use any oil, but a little bit, up to half a litre or so per thousand miles is considered acceptable. Hope this isn't you having a bit of a go at the OP chap
Beyond that, agreed. A little bit, hardly a disaster but do keep an eye on it. It can be worth checking the coolant WHEN CAR IS COLD because if there is oil in there then there is a more serious issue.
Good luck!

Thank you, checked again this morning, oil still ok, just under max, will check coolant too tomorrow, got quote from very trustworthy garage, that we have used in the past, and for full sevice it is £170 incl vat - didnt quite expect that much, may ring around, husband thinks just take it to them as they are really good/honest people.0 -

That's why they're not the cheapest. It's worth paying extra for.0 -
Beware of garages that charge £99 for a full service, You might be paying £99 for an oil change and a long list of items they will check but not topup or adjust.
Check brake fluid, LOW recommend topup or flush, Brakes worn recommend replacement URGENTLY.
etc etc.
Also if your car uses long life oil it maybe extra.
Find out what your actually getting for your money. What parts are they going to replace and not just check?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
