I've aquires an old PC still running on XP SP1
I've tried everything to update it to SP2 and then SP3
I've even tried going via SP1a but that wont work either
I've heard that the main cause of this problem is that Microsoft has witdrawn support for XP and the online support for SP1 is now non-existant
Ideally having a copy of the necessary updates on CD Rom would probably solve this issue
Can anyone tell me where I can download it from? Preferably for free
Thanks

Support for XP SP2 did end last year.
You can download SP1a & SP3 offline installation here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) must be preinstalled before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

The fact ms have stopped supporting xp shouldnt affect people downloading and installing the updates.0

You'll no longer get updates via automatic updates or the windows update site if the OS is no longer supported.
With regards to XP, XP SP2 and below are no longer supported. Only systems with XP SP3 will get updates via automatic updates or the windows update site.

Why download via 3rd party sites when they direct you to MS's servers anyway? You can download direct from MS as above.

it's easier to install sp2 then sp3 rather than updating straight to sp30 -
just for reference, this method does work, had to do another oldie last week and out came my SP disks
Also, vista SP 1 & 2 can be downloaded and run from disk too ...

you HAVE to install SP1a or SP2 before you can install SP3, as waddler pointed out in an earlier post..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
