I still don’t follow your argument are you saying people on benefits can’t find anywhere to live but there are houses sitting empty for less than £50k.

    Yes.

Allow for the risk of the house being gutted for scrap or becoming a party house and it should make sense.

There is no way I would want to be a BTL landlord but if there are houses for sale at less than £50k and lots of people even if they are on benefits wanting somewhere to live. With the lha for Oldham (I know you don’t live in Oldham but it has one of the lowest LHA) being £114 a week or £494 a month and the interest on a 50k mortgage at 6% being £250 someone is missing a good business opportunity.

People do know how to add up around here you know.

Yet still they wont risk paying 50k for a house and renting it out.

    Madness eh

If you just base a BTL venture around here on the numbers then you will do well out of it.

If you base it on reality and you realise you have got a very high chance of renting the house out to a constant stream of knob eds and 5lags then the numbers no longer add up.

The area is getting worse because of job losses, less wages coming into the area has caused an increase in crime and the level of crime was quite high to start with.

It would be nice if something was done to sort the area out but the only police you ever see around here are the ones giving somebody a speeding ticket on the main roads, they dont bother coming onto the estates anymore.

They do turn up if shots are fired and set up a mobile police station for 24 hours and then leave so at least thats something.

There are lots more towns just like mine.

You paint a very grim picture of the North West there are some very rough estates down here have but it sounds a lot worst where you are have you ever considered moving south.

Over the last decade we have had 3 million+ immigrants who by definition have no fixed long term roots. Add to these numbers those who moved to London to seek work but who are now displaced.

It might not be such a bad idea to increase social mobility. In other threads, people bemoan the fact that there are jobs available but not people with the skills to fill them!

We pay council workers to come up with solutions, and this is exactly what they are doing.

I must ask, after all these years of uncontrolled free for all immigration which has doubled under Cameron.
Why has nobody ever thought about where they will all live ?

I dont mean to paint a grim picture of the north west, i just see it from both sides. Im kind of an inbetweener. (Not like them ones of the telly:))

I see what gets reported in the media local or otherwise and 9 times out of ten things are made out to be less serious than they actually are.

I know all the criminals, dealers and thieves because i grew up with most of them and went to the same school as them, i just chose not to take that path in life.

I know how the police used to treat people around here because they have treated me the same on more than one occasion for no other reason than me walking down the street.

There are lots of good decent people around here but most dont socialise in the area because they wouldnt enjoy it, lots of families moved around here during the boom as a few new build estates went up and this area was the only place they could afford to buy. Its probably the biggest mistake they will ever make.

Sadly i dont think the area i live in will ever be sorted out because this area is where the problem people get moved to so other areas get sorted out.

Im moving to the next town when i buy my first house because its not as rough and is more of a working town.

The town has been rough ever since i was a kid and things have just got worse and worse because nothing gets done about it, thats probably why i may sound flippant about things that happen around here, as its all you have ever known then you kind of become immune to it all and nothing really shocks you anymore.

Ive worked down south a few times but i wouldnt like to live there permanently as i didnt really fit in for some reason;) plus the chippys are not to my liking. Weather was better though.

I’m not sure why you didn’t fit I’ve meet people from all over the country through work and my hobby and I find that for the most part people are the pretty much the same. I was in telecoms myself and got on well with people from all parts of the country.
