Cost of running my laptop??

Im trying to figure out the cost to run my laptop.

i hered the cost per unit of electric is somthing like 15p,
and 1 unit = 1 kWh

i know that volts x amps = watts.

but do i go by the input watts/amps on the adaptor or
the output watts/amps??

Neither, because it will hardly ever be charging at the rated output (or input).

Your laptop probably uses approx 50 watts or less.

  • so is that 50watts per hour? meaning the laptop will run for 20 hours with 1 unit (1 kWh) of electric?

Yes, approx. I hope you are not paying 15p per kWh for your electricity though?
The cost of running your laptop is fairly insignificant. The big ticket electrical items are space heating and hot water heating (if heated by electricity), then tumble driers.

    Dirt cheap

My laptop measures 11-12watts at idle, 15-17watts variable load.

In general, most laptops will only hit the number on the power adaptor when charging the battery, and doing stuff at the same time.
Doing stuff where the fan isn't spinning all of the time - you're likely to use at most a third of the 'sticker' rating of the PSU.

Really? I pay more than that on average these days. Who can supply me with 4 kWh per day for less than 15p per kWh?

A quick comp site check on my own region gives a price of £183 for an annual consumption of 1,460kWh. Npower Bill Saver May 2013 is the cheapest tariff. That's 12.5p per kWh.
But your usage is atypical and extremely low-the average user (3,400kWh) can do a little better on Ovo New Energy Fixed (12.4p per kWH).
Your region may be a little more, but certainly not as much as 15p.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
