Is this what they call 'limp home mode'?

For the benefit of anyone reading this and wondering about their "coiled spring light", it lights when you start the car as the glow plugs are prewarming the engine. You MUST wait for the light to go out before starting the engine.0

I would suggest a blocked DPF. Depends what kind of driving the OP does, lots of short journeys or regular blasts down the motorway.
If only short journeys, this is VERY common.
Get yourself a code reader so you can read and clear codes, it pays for itself the first time you use it.
There are loads of cheaper versions but I have a U381
I just searched ebay and was pleasantly surprised by the first result, you'll know what I mean if you see it

Apples2, Please stop making ASSUMPTIONS
lol
2005 car wont have a DPF, They do have CATs though.
I could offer more advice but i would only be making more assumptions.
If you dont offer all the information required then people can only make assumptions

Well not sure what's going on now. OH took the car out for a run this morning before heading to the garage and the thing is running beautifully. He drove fast, he drove slow, he accelerated rapidly etc etc in an effort to get the fault to show up and it didn't. Also no dashboard warning lights on.
As soon as I got in the car with him I could feel there was no issue with lack of power as there was yesterday. Will see if the garage have a diagnostic but it's just a small independent so it may not and we'll have to drive into the city.
The car is mainly used for him getting back and forward to work, just over a half hour journey each way, largely on motorway. As well as the occasional 360 mile round trip back home. So not really short trips.
Thanks all.Herman - MP for all!0 -

I'm female and and can't honestly describe my feelings as 'pleasantly surprised'. I'll pass the link onto my OH though and see what he thinks about the 'code readers'.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Sorry but all that comment does is prove you jump to conclusions.
Instead of replying as you did, you easily have said ' when you initially turn the key, do you wait for the dash lights (or glow plug, pick as you will) to go out before starting the engine?' That way you would have facts to go on.
You didn't do that. You just made something up and replied on that basis.
Anyway, as I said earlier, I do appreciate your other pointers.Herman - MP for all!0
