JSA joke

Hi all,

I thought I'd posted a 'please advise' on here but seem not to have! So I'll try again!

JSA was worked out that we - me, hubby & 9 yr old - could live on £79 per week. I work 3 hours a week part time. I asked JSA if we had to inform tax creds we were now getting JSA (as hubby had been unable to find work since Oct), woman said yes, we shouldn't get tax creds as well as JSA.

Thing is our tax creds were worked out for what we both earned last year (which was 9,600.00), so we are getting £116 per week for tax & child tax creds. So JSA thought we could live on £79?????

As we aren't stupid enough to bite our selves in the butt and loose £40 a week hubby stopped signing on. Then on Friday hubby gets his P45 from the job centre saying we have to declare the JSA total to tax credits for 2006-07's income.

But now I'm thinking - was the JSA woman right? Or did she give us some duff information? Because it doesn't make sense?

I don't get paid until the end of the month so we are living on our tax cred money and trying to pay bills - including old debts like council tax overpayment, petrol so I can go to work and try and get extra shifts etc.

Does anyone know any different?

Thanks in advance

Lisa

  • Hi

The £79 per week JSA. That's probably correct as the JSA will only be for the adults and the couple rate is £91. deductions will be made for the P/T earnings so £79 will be correct.

Tax Credits do use the past complete tax year as the basis of the award. The change in your circumstances should be notified to Tax Credits - 0845 300 3900. I don't know if the current award will change however. Tax Credits will advise

You will have to notify Tax Credits of your income via jsa as you will get the credits for your children - the JSA you get is just for the adults.
